Equine Assisted Therapy

Horse-Assisted Psychotherapy integrates horses into the therapeutic process as a way to help individuals understand and learn about who they are, and how to find optimal wellness. EAP is founded on the premise that learning to understand a horse's behavior, which is very similar to humans, will transfer to how a person sees and comprehends their own behavior.

People who engage in Equine-Assisted Therapy Activities like grooming, feeding, and caring for horses under the care of mental health professionals often experience improvements in emotional regulation, mindfulness, executive functioning, confidence, responsibility, and peace. This therapy’s goal is to help an individual reach personal goals, optimal happiness, and an understanding of self. Equine-Assisted Therapy (EAT) has become increasingly popular because of its experiential approach and emerging evidence of its effectiveness.

OUR GOAL is to provide a supportive environment that empowers all types of individuals through equine-assisted activities to reach their full potential.

mini vists

In 2007, Special Equestrians of GA expanded the program to bring the magic of horses to children and adults who, due to illness or disability can not come to the farm. Using specially trained and housebroken miniature horses, SEG travels into the community on “mini” visits to schools, hospitals, rehabs, nursing homes, and special events for both the special needs and  community at large.

The minis are comfortable with being surrounded by all types of medical equipment, from IV poles and tubing to wheel chairs and patient wagons. Chosen for their kind hearts and sweet nature, Fern, Sammy, Frankie and Murphy are quite comfortable.

While the minis visit the hospital, patients can try their hand at brushing the horses with grooming supplies and leading the horses up and down hallways and gardens.
